If I spend too much time on here, I find it hard to be around people. Yet it has improved my thinking skills, but verbal communication I struggle with. People cannot always understand what I say. I want to improve so badly. but am a shy person.
On here I am not so shy however
I think that the internet improves writing skills, which is a very specific type of thinking skill.
The problem is that it's not spontaneous communication. Even with instant messaging, you still get a chance to think about what you are going to write, and to word it very carefully. You also have full control over your emotional state, whereas when you are in a 'live' conversation with someone, your emotions show, though body language and the tone of your voice.
So…I don't think the internet will help you out with your interpersonal skills. Sorry.

Yes of course. I use to write papers on certain topics, but doing this does not teach me anything about how to communicate and to interact with others.
For example, I noticed that I was barely able to ask a question in good English until I began to do so on Yahoo! Answers, though my English writing was rather good otherwise.
Also, I mostly learned English by my own in reading books and this puts me in certain embarrassment when talking with others in this language because, as a result, they find my English a bit too elaborate and, say, unnatural. In other words, some people say that I speak English as if reading a book.
But this does not solve all my problems. For, I express great difficulties at understanding English speaking in certain movies in which actors use "street-English," or slang. For worse I have some hearing problems and I rely almost exclusively on the sound of vowels when listening to others. Can hardly make difference between "m" and "n," for example.

No substitute for hands-on experience and you won't find that here. The Internet has made people lazy with grammar and communication. The only way to become better in social interaction is to take part in it.

The internet improves typing speed and general knowledge.
As for actual communications skills, it doesn't help all that much. For wirtten communication, computers in general help very little as we have spellcheck to correct our lazy spelling instead of making us actually learn to spell correctly, on the internet everyone uses internet slang all the time and that isn't exactly conducive to better communication. Also, on the internet, no one really knows who we are, we can invent a whole other personality, or allow parts of ourself that are normally hidden to come out. Being faceless on the internet (deindividuation) means we can ssay what we want and do what with want with little fear of reprimand. This actually makes coping with real life harder, as we get used to being so free and brave, then find that talking face to face is almost impossible.
To actually improve face to face communication skills, you need some face to face contact. Just, take the confidence you have on the internet, remember how it feels to be less shy and try your hardest to keep that feeling going when talking to real people. Hard, but it'll work. Just stick with it.
Good luck!

I believe it improves your thinking process and writing skills. Verbal communication involves other things, so even if you use voice chats you are still missing on reading facial signals and body language interpretation.

I think Internet could improve our communication skill. Communication face to face is much better, but in fact not many people have chance to communicate that way because they are not living in an environment using English as a native language. In that case, Internet is the only tool for us to have some communication with native speakers by chatting, writing blog and etc…
I have studied English for 4 years at the college but I didn't have much chance to communicate face to face in English with a native speaker. My professor at the college was also a non native speaker, and what I studied at school was far different from what people used to say in casual situation.
