What are the key theories behind communication and interpersonal skills?

My assignment is asking me for examples of how i have used effective communication skills using refernces of theories of communication and interpersoanl skills and i am at a losst. I've tried googling theoriests but come up with nothing. The books i have aren't helping me either.

What subject is this course? I can't believe that the textbooks you've been using wouldn't contain this information.
