hey,i am pursuing a B.tech course in mechanical engineering from a college in tamil nadu.i’ve seen around that its just enough to mug up things to pass exams and get a degree in colleges here.everyone around does the same thing and even the atmosphere in the colleges does not encourage gaining of practical knowledge..even the examination system favours mugging up and there’s not a hint of practical knowledge gained.i’ve completed my first year now and feel all i’ve done last year is just mugging up some crap which i understood,but not upto the mark that would give me a mastery and a firm grip in practical knowlwedge.when i enquire with seniors,to my shock,they tell me that its just enough to have good communication and interpesonal skills and 75%-80%marks(by mugging up or else,it doesnt matter) and u will get good placements.so,is it really true that its not that important to spend efforts and hardwork to master core subjects?what if i plan to get a job in my core field or plan to pursue higher studies?i feel i can master my core subjects with some hardwork,but if its not important,then i can spend that effort on improving my communication and interpersonal skills.please help!!my career is at stake.my basic question is ,should i sacrifice my efforts on core subjects for the sake of communication and interpersonal skills?

Though am not a student of B.tech I would suggest you that both are equally important. I don’t think extra focus is needed for either of both. Do both simultaneously. In today’s corporate world one also should know how to apply practically what has been studied theoretically. So just to score don’t mug up things from your core subjects but try to apply them practically and learn with interest. Along with this also concentrate on your interpersonal skills OK.
Communication, Interpersonal skills and understanding your core subjects is just as important as Sim card for a cell to b used." cell without a sim is useless so as to a sim without a cell".
